Nethallu iguru recipe | Small fish curry recipe | Andhra famous nethallu iguru recipe | నెత్తల్లు ఇగురు

Today I am going to share you Andhra famous, healthy and tasty Nethallu iguru or small fish curry in a simple and easy process. Nethallu gets cooked very fast on a very low flame and taste amazing, that could be consumed with bones. Usually these small sized fish are even more tastier when compared with big ones but cleaning part will be consumed.

These small fish is famous and taste amazing, especially near godavari districts. At my mom’s home, every week we get these fresh small fish from bhimavaram, west godavari and will make into nethallu iguru, nethallu pulusu, kobbari nethallu, dosakaya nethallu, and so on…  

How to clean nethallu or small fish:
Remove head, fins, tale and the stomach part should be cleaned.
To cleaned fish add turmeric powder, salt, curd and rinse under cold water for 2 to 3 times to avoid fishy odor.

Ingredients to marinate Nethallu or small fish:
  • Nethallu / small fish – 1 kg
  • Salt – 1 tsp or required amount
  • Red chili powder – 2 to 3 tsps
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tsp
  • Cinnamon stick powder – ¼ tsp
  • Garam masala powder – ¼ tsp
  • Ginger & garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp
  • Curd – 1 tbsp
Other ingredients for nethallu iguru or small fish curry:
  • Oil – 4 small ladle full
  • Onion – 2 medium size
  • Green chili – 3 or adjust to your taste
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprig
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Ginger & garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves - fist full
Process for marination:
  • In a wide bowl, add all the ingredients to marinate nethallu. Mix it well and marinate for about half an hour.
Process for Nethallu iguru or small fish curry:
  • Heat oil in a wide open heavy bottom kadai or pan, add finely chopped onion, curry leaves, green chili. Mix it well and cook until onions turns to golden in colour on a medium flame.
  • Add turmeric powder, ginger & garlic paste. Mix it well and cook for few seconds or until raw smell goes out from ginger & garlic paste.
  • Now add marinated fish pieces. Mix it well gently and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes. (Do not over mix these fish pieces, they may break and tends to become paste). So gently mix as shown in the video.
  • Add enough amount of water and mix it well gently. Cook for 10 minutes on a very low flame.
  • Once these fish pieces are well cooked and done. Finally add finely chopped coriander leaves and turn off the flame.
  • Serve this healthy, easy and tasty nethallu iguru or small fish curry with hot steamed white or brown rice or jeera rice of your choice.
