Chalimidi Recipe | Vadapappu Recipe | Panakam Recipe | How to make chalimidi, vadapappu, panakam | బెల్లం చలిమిడి వడపప్పు పానకం

Most popular and traditional festive sweet, Chalimidi, vadapappu, panakam and these are offered as naivedyam or Prasadam especially during sri rama Navami, ganesh chaturthi, Navratri, Kartika pournami and few other auspicious occasions.

Traditionally there are two types of chalimidi: one is uncooked pachi chalimidi and other pakam chalimidi. Today i am going to share you uncooked version, pachi chalimidi which will be quick and easy method in a simple process and in future i will post pakam chalimidi which is traditionally prepared for marriage or baby shower.


Main important key role of chalimidi is to make homemade rice flour.

Homemade rice flour
  • Wash rice well in water and soak in water for at least 2 to 3 hours. Drain out all the water by using a strainer and fan dry on a clean cloth until there is no wet in rice.
  • By using mixie jar, Grind into fine powder and sieve the flour. Here when you sieve the flour, you can use the rice flour for chalimidi, pala thalikalu, jantikalu, Murukku, Ribbon pakoda, ariselu or adhirasam and so on.. and coarse rice ravva for undrallu or kudumulu, upma, kheer and so on..or even make into fine powder of your choice. 
  • You can store this homemade rice flour or rice rava for upto a month or two by refrigerating in a ziplock bag or in an airtight container.

Ingredients for chalimidi:

  • Homemade Rice flour – ½  cup
  • Sugar / Grated jaggery – ¼ cup
  • Cardamom powder – 1 tsp
  • Ghee – ½ tbsp

Ingredients for vadapappu:

  • Pesarapappu – ¼ cup
  • Water – ½ cup or required amount

Ingredients for panakam:

  • Water – 1 cup
  • Grated jaggery – 2 to 3 tbsps
  • Cardamom powder – tiny pinch
  • Ginger – 1 inch thinly sliced 
  • Freshly crushed pepper powder – ¼ tsp

Procedure for chalimidi

  • Take homemade rice flour into a bowl,  add  grated jaggery or even you can use powdered sugar of your choice, but traditionally jaggery is used, add cardamom powder, ghee.
  • Now mix it well completely and make into dough ball or instead of mixing with your hand for a minute, you can even grind it under 5 to 10 seconds by using mixie jar.
  • Here our chalimidi is ready now.

Procedure for panakam:

  • Into a bowl, add a cup of water, grated jaggery and mix until jaggery is melted completely. Now strain it by using tea strainer into another bowl and to this add freshly crushed pepper powder, tiny pinch of cardamom powder, 1 inch size ginger thinly sliced and mix it well completely.
  • Here our panakam is ready now.

Procedure for vada pappu: 
  • Wash and soak pesara pappu or moong dal for atleast 30 mins to 1 hour. Drain out all the water by using strainer and set aside.
  • Our traditional chalimidi, panakam, vada pappu are ready now. Offer to god as naivedyam or prasadam on any festival.
