Sabudana khichdi Recipe / Saggubiyyam Khichdi Recipe / Sago Khichdi Recipe | Vrat recipe | Fasting food recipe | సాబుదాన కిచిడి

Today i am going to share you a Simple and Delicious north indian dish Sabudana khichdi. This khichdi is usually made during vrat or fasting days like Navratri, Maha shivratri, Ekadasi or for any other religious fasting and also we can make it for breakfast or else as a evening tea time snack. 

Important components for Sabudana khichdi:

Wash and soak a cup of sabudana in a cup of water or enough amount for 5 to 6 hours or for overnight and also water measurement and soaking time may varies on the type of sabudana you use.

Generally for sabudana khichdi we use roasted peanuts. Instead of roasted peanuts, we can also replace with spiced powder or putnala podi or spicy roasted chana dal powder, by adding this spice powder will be even more delicious khichdi, but you have to add at the end of the recipe.

When you are preparing this sabudana khichdi for breakfast or else as a evening tea time snack. we can also add mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp, urad dal - 1tsp, channa dal - 1tsp, sliced onion - 1/2 medium size, chopped ginger - 1 tsp, chopped carrot - 1/2 cup, green peas - 1/4 cup of your choice, this will bring an additional taste to this dish.

When you are preparing this sabudana khichdi during fasting or vrat, we use below listed ingredients. Every home has their own version of making it and i am sharing you, which i generally make during fasting.

Ingredients for Sabudana Khichdi:

  • Sabudana or Sago or Tapioca - 1 cup
  • Boiled potato - 1 medium size
  • Green chilies - 2 finely chopped or adjust according to your taste
  • Roasted peanuts - 1/2 cup
  • Ghee or Oil - 1 1/2 tbsps
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - sprig or few
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tbsps finely chopped
  • Salt or Sendha namak  -  to taste (generally during fasting we use sendha namak)
  • Half of the medium size Lemon juice or adjust according to your taste

Procedure to make Sabudana khichdi:

  • Wash sago or sabudana well in water  and drain out all the water. Soak this sabudana in a cup of water or enough amount for 5 to 6 hours or for overnight. Here water measurement and soaking time may varies on the type of sabudana you use. Here as shown in the video i have soaked sago or sabudana for 5 hours, All the water has been completely absorbed and increased in volume. when you press the soaked sago it should mash very easily. If any water is left remaining drain out all the water and set aside.
  • Roast peanuts in a heavy bottom pan on low to medium heat until peanuts turns to light golden colour. Transfer to other plate and once they are at room temperature, remove the skin of roasted peanuts by rubbing them with your both palms.
  • Heat oil or ghee in a heavy bottom pan on medium heat, add cumin, chopped green chilies, curry leaves and saute it well for few seconds. 
  • Now add peeled, cubed boiled potatoes. mix it well completely, cover it with a lid and cook for a minute on a low to medium heat. In the meanwhile, Grind roasted peanuts into coarse powder by using mixie jar. Just you have to grind it for 1 or 2 pulses or even you can use mortar pestle of your choice. 
  • Now add soaked sabudana, Salt to taste, coarsely ground peanuts and even you can also add pepper powder or red chili powder of your choice. Mix it well completely, cover this and cook for 5 minutes or until sabudana turns into transparent on a low to medium heat. Stir inbetween cooking to prevent sticking at the bottom.
  • Here as shown in the video, you can see sabudana is nice and transparent. Now add chopped coriander leaves, mix it well completely and turn off the flame. 
  • Finally add freshly squeezed lemon juice and mix it once again completely. make sure to turn off the flame, While adding lemon juice.  
  • Here our sabudana khichdi is ready now. Serve this sabudana khichdi as plain or with plain curd of your choice.
